www.odogwublog.com reports that Anambra state chapter
of the Youth Take-Over 2019 Movement, a
Non Governmental Organisation, has appealed to the state House of Assembly and
its leadership to assent to the Not too Young to run bill transmitted to it
since December last year by the National Assembly for passage.
Not Too Young to run
bill is one of the fifteen (15) constitutional amendment bills transmitted to
the 36 states Houses of Assembly for passage and out of which, twenty one (21)
states have assented to the bill except Anambra Assembly and fifteen (15) other
states.
Expressing disappointment
on the delay by the state lawmakers to
assent to the bill, Youth Take-Over Movement in a three paged statement issued
yesterday at Awka, regretted that late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu whose
party, APGA controls the machineries of the state, became the leader of the
Eastern Region at the age of 33, wondering why Governor Obiano has not used his
relationship with the lawmakers to ensure urgent passage of the bill despite
his youth friendly image in the state.
The group in the
statement signed by the state Coordinator, Comrade Chris Ofodile and secretary,
Emeka Ral also expressed worry that Nigerian youths are shielded from the corridors
of political power, hence their involvement in thugerry and violence.
It reads in part: “…Many
reasons can be adduced for our sad trajectory. Chief among them, however is the
conscious isolation of the Nigerian youths from the corridors of power. You may
recall that ninety percent, if not more of our leaders at independence were
youths. The likes of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Alhaji
Tafawa Balewa were at their youthful best, thereby employing their dynamism, energy
and zeal in the course of building a viable Nigeria.
“It is alarming that
when Nigerian youths record outstanding achievements in all areas of life to
the admiration of the global community, they are shut out of political space
where they are engaged by the traditional political elites as moblisers,
Personal Assistants, and sometimes, instrument
of electoral malpractice. It is the desire of youth Take Over 2019 Movement to
put a stop to this. Never again shall Nigerian Youths be used as instrument of
destablisation” it stated.
The group however frowned
over non conduct of local government election in Anambra state and called on
Governor Obiano to begin the process that will lead to the conduct of local government
election in the state in no distant time while urging voters who are 18 years
and above to utilise the opportunity of the ongoing voter registration exercise
and obtain their PVCs, noting that youths will not only vote in 2019 but will also
be voted for.
