Shell eyes Nigeria's off-grid rural power provision



Shell has revealed plans to enter into Nigeria's off-grid rural electricity provision through through its electricity gravity light initiative, capable of solving supply of light from kerosene lantern and candle that is rampant in rural African settings.
The gravity light is an innovation through Shell's make the future campaign in which clean and safer led electricity is generated through weight in a bag.
The Oil multinational said at the launch of the scheme in Kenya that the programme targeting 80% Kenyans who are without power access would also be extended to Nigeria and other countries where rural populace are on-grid power supply difficulties.
Country Chair, Shell Kenya, Brian Muriuki, said : Across Kenya, 77 percent of people are living without access to electricity. Bringing gravity light technology to the country shows how collaboration and smart thinking really is the key to providing the most basic of human rights, while enabling people to prosper and progress"
He added that the programme would in due course will be taken to Nigeria, and of course all other parts of rural Africa setting, where populace face difficulty in electricity supply.
Commercial Director of the gravity light foundation, Caroline Angus added: Our aim is for Gravity Light to provide a clean, safe reliable and affordable alternative to kerosene lamps.
Nigerian popular singer, Yemi Alade is one of the ambassadors of the project, and she joined the 50 night tour of Kenya to highlight the benefits Gravity lights is bringing to families in Kenya.
