The cut off of Ikem bridge in Isi-Uzo local government area, Enugu State has brought untold hardship to some communities in Ebonyi, Enugu and Benue States.

The collapse of hanging bridge across Ebonyi river has totally cut off residents of communities in the above mentioned states who move around on social and economic motives.

The collapse of the bridge was as a result of a heavy truck owned by Dangote cement that plied on it.

People living in the communities that ply the bridge have expressed frustration and agony over the collapse as they have called on government at state and federal level to come quickly to their aid to put another bridge for them.

However, the bridge which was said to have been constructed by the Nigeria Army shortly after civil war has been serving southerners and northerners.

The communities have managed to put up a makeshift bamboo bridge to trek across the river to get to their homes and  some of the people working on the makeshift bridge said that the bamboo bridge was necessary for human movement.

In his reaction, the chairman of Isi-Uzo local government council, Mr. Augustine Nnamani described the incident as “a very sad situation that will really affect the people stressing that people now take through Obollor-Afor since Ehamufu road is a night mare.

Nnamani said he has contacted the Governor, Ugwuanyi on the issue adding that he was unhappy by the development but promised that something would be done on it.

Meanwhile motorists plying Ehamufu to Enugu now stop at different end of the river while passengers swims across the river which also divided the Orie market into two with one at its original market venue and the other at the Ikem junction.
