FORMER governor of Ebonyi State,
Chief Martin Elechi has been interrogated by the Economic and
Financial Crimes
Commission (EFFCC) over alleged misappropriating of public funds running into
billions of naira.
Elechi, together with some of his former commissioners and aides came to
EFCC at Wuse, Abuja Office and were interrogated.
It would be recalled that some persons had sent reports and petitions
against the former Governor of Ebonyi to the EFCC when he was the chief
executive of the state but due to
immunity, covering his position as governor then he could not be grilled until
now.
Elechi's immunity elapsed on May 29th after serving for two tenures as
governor leading to his invitation and subsequent honouring of the commission's
invitation.
The EFCC public relations officer, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the
invitation and interrogation of the governor to journalists stressing that
Elechi was being interrogated for alleged misappropriation of fund meant for
local government councils and the centenary fund.
It would also be noted that on January, 29, 2015, the EFCC questioned
the former governor's son, Nnanna Elechi, on allegations of money laundering
and embezzlement running into millions of naira.
Meanwhile, some persons interviewed said that it was high time some of
the leaders who were indicted of stealing funds were taken to special courts
and if found guilty must go to jail and must also refund the money stolen.
