State "with the co-operation of road users
Chief Onwughalu, said further that
the operation keep going was targeted to ensure that all busy roads were clear
any time of the day if the road users could only obey simple traffic rules.
"We know that some road users
are very stubborn. We do not fight anybody or collect cash from offenders. We
will only draw the offender's attention to our contravention order and then
impound the automobile, if necessary. The offender will have to pay government
through a designated bank account, a certain amount of money commensurate with
the traffic offence committed. It is meant to serve as a deterrent to
others," the Commander explained.
He exonerated his officers from
extortion allegations, adding that the agency had its laid down mode of
discipline of its members which he said included suspension and outright sack
if there was any established act of indiscipline against any of the officers in
the field or in office. He told journalists that the rebranded road traffic
agency had zero tolerance for extortion or any act of indiscipline.
Chief Onwughalu pleaded with road
users not to be so much in a hurry so as to avoid contributing to road traffic
problem which he described as man-made.
