Anambra: Hope Rises For Flood Disaster Victims In Ogbaru


   
The lamentations of 2012 early July floods victims in Ogbaru local government area, Anambra state may soon end as the Ogbaru council Chairman, Hon. Victor Nwachukwu Agolua has volunteered to carry their cries to the state government and the federal government for adequate compensation.


The Council Chairman revealed that on the efforts of getting compensation for them, the council has setup a committee on the Industrial Harbour Layout to among other issues, work with the industrialists to help bring their case for compensation to the higher levels of government.

Agolua who addressed the Harbour Layout Industrialists Association, the major victims at Pokobros Group of Companies premises, yesterday said he would have visited them earlier but was delayed till now due to protracted litigation that trailed his victory at the poll.

Daily Independent reports that the flood the entire country in 2012 displacing over two million people as at November with property worth several billions destroyed. The President inaugurated a Presidential committee to provide succor to the victims. Billions were raised and shared to the victims by the Federal government committee with all dusts raised over diversion of funds and outright embezzlement.

His words, “This to a large extent slowed down our settling down. I therefore apologize for this”, he pleaded.

“I deeply commiserate with you on the losses you incurred from the disastrous flood we experienced a few years ago. I understand that till now nothing has been done to help your industries recover from unimaginable losses you incurred”.

“This therefore is one of the reasons why we are here to establish a mutual rewarding partnership”, he stated.

 “The partnership is also aimed at exploring a holistic approach to reduce youth restiveness, enhance security, improve upon infrastructure and create jobs”, he stated.

Hon. Agolua was represented by his Special Assistant On Media and Political Matters, Chief Peter Okala. He revealed that already the council has a data base of all the unemployed youths which he said could always be granted them when in need pointing out that the committee would serve as a buffer between the people, government and industrialists.

He also urged the industrialists to reciprocate the kind gesture by improving on their corporate social responsibilities especially on youths empowerment and development.

In his response, Chief Paul Okonkwo on behalf of the industrialists pledged to abide by the pleas of the council chairman stating that he was the only council chairman that visited them to show sympathy since the inception of the council.


He expressed optimism that the partnership would achieve its aim and objectives.
