Home town of Peter and Paul Okoye ,Ifitedunu community in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State has announced its readiness to build a memorium with an obelisk in memory of the town’s sons and daughters who died during Biafran/Nigerian civil war.
The town’s monarch, Igwe (Dr.) Emeka Ilouno who made the pronouncement weekend in his palace, on his ‘iri ji’ day said the town is being hunted by the spirit of those fallen heroes, who, he said, have not been given proper burial in the town since their demise.
“We shall also have both traditional and religious memorial service for the pogroms of 1966 and have the names of all the dead from clans pasted on the marble in the obelisk as a way of immortalizing them as many of them are very angry with us for not have given them a befitting burial” he said.
Igwe Ilouno who also announced that henceforth, any Ifitedunu indigene who attains the age of eighty years will be celebrated alive and conferred a title, describing longevity as a blessing from God, even as he however set up a palace conflict resolution committee that will assist him and other cabinet members in handling some internal communal crisis that has hitherto been a torn on his flesh in the town.
He however enjoined Ifitedunians to group themselves into cooperatives of clans, families, associates or denominations for the purpose of benefiting from government programmes and agric loans which is on going in the state.
Commemorating with the monarch, the president General of Ifitedunu community, Prince Nezianya Obinabo also used the opportunity to add that the town’s citizens are henceforth banned from leaving Ifitedunu on the ‘Nkwo’ market day without the written permission from the town union.
He charged them to be vigilant and to report any crime and suspicious movement in the town as a way of improving security.
Prince Obinabo further explained that Ifitedunu doesn’t celebrate new yam festival but ‘alo mmuo’ which he argued is not fetish but a time of bumper harvest and a way of reviving the cultural heritage.
