Protests In Onitsha Over Power Supply

Staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, have been accused of master minding the stealing of electricity installations in Nkpor and its environs, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Consumers of electricity at Ububa, and some parts of Umusiome and Isingwu made this accusation yesterday while reacting to the stealing of armoured cables at the transformer installed within Ikezue square, near Afor Nkpor market.

The consumers who threatened to embark on protest to the PHCN Ogidi Business Unit Office, were however prevented from doing so by their leader, Hon Chris Ezeigwe.

They told newsmen that they have been in black out for three consecutive months now without the officials of PHCN doing something about it adding that they were responsible for the stealing of the armoured cables in the transformer.

In their words, “officials of the PHCN are our number one suspects because they know the worth of the armoured cables they stole and we give them two weeks ultimatum to replace the stolen cables and restore power supply to us without further delay”.

“We did not celebrate the Easter period because you don’t celebrate in darkness. Again armed robbers now threaten us as they are evil and evil things happen in darkness”.

In the words of Chief Christopher Ogham, Patron of the consumers, “the officials of PHCN have been doing this thing with impunity, this is the second time they have stolen the armoured cables, we will not allow them this time around, they know how they removed the cables without being electrocuted because a novice can not tamper with transformers and other electrical installations”.

They recalled that similar thing occurred at the transformer installed at the gate of Immaculate Heart Road and Our Lady’s/All Saints Road hinting that same suspects were brain behind the stealing.

They warned that after the two weeks ultimatum they wound protest to the Ogidi Business Unit Office to demand for the arrest and prosecution of  PHCN officials responsible for the stealing.
