NPC Warns Over Politicizing Census , Assures To Adopt Modern Technology In Census Processing

Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Eze Duruiheoma (SAN) said the commission would adopt modern technology in the collection, processing and dissemination of census data in its bid to provide the nation with real data to aid national planning.

Duruiheoma who visited the Anambra office of the commission on  today noted that it was only a reliable, accurate and verifiable census figure that could ensure the realization of the transformation Agenda of the federal government.

He further pointed out that based on its mandate, the commission was committed to deliver a successful census even as he expressed worries on the politicization of population issues.

He said the commission planned to achieve 100 per cent vital registration by 2015 and enjoined nongovernmental organizations to join in the advocacy campaigns to sensitize the populace on the need to take census for what is ‘planning’.

The NPC Boss stated: “The Commission plans to conduct a truly scientific census which data will be widely available to planners at the national, state and local government levels. Towards this end cutting edge technology will be adopted.

“Methodology and strategies for the conduct of biometric based census are being finalized. Data from vital events will also complement and yield additional data for planning purposes, in line with the strategic direction of the commission; we hope to achieve complete coverage in the registration of births and deaths by 2015.

“The relationship between population and development has not been properly appreciated by planners and decision makers leading to appalling non integration of population in the planning process”.

Duruiheoma expressed worries over the inability to achieve perfect census needed for national development due to the politics attached to it.

On hand to receive the chairman were Prof. Chika Moore the Anambra federal commissioner, Dr Joachim Ulasi, the state director and other members of staff.

Moore thanked him and promised that the state team would assist the commission to achieve the best result it desired.
