There was tension in
Onitsha and environs today as members of the Joint Military operations
inaugurated by Governor Willie Obiano took over the state literally especially
Onitsha, Nkpor, and Awkuzu junction.
The Nation observed that
they were strategically positioned as if waiting for a fleeing team of robbers
for several hours without talking to anyone but busy and at alert.
Meanwhile there was
tension in Umuawulu as political touts masquerading as vigilant men went on
shooting spree and hijacking vehicles belonging to the community’s vigilante
group.
Shortly after observing
them in various junctions in Onitsha , Obosi and Nkpor information filtered in
that one Omezie Chukwura, a prominent estate agent from Obosi community
in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state was arrested He was one-time
chairman of Obosi Land Committee. Why he was arrested was not known as at press
time.
Chukwura the Nation
leant was picked up by the DIG team at his home town, Obosi for various alleged
criminal offences levied against him.
Leader of the Federal SARS
team, Chris Ezike told newsmen at the Onitsha Police Area Command Headquarters,
that he was aware of the arrest and declined further comments.
State Police Public
Relations Officer, PPRO, Emeka Chukwuemeka DSP, declined comment on the arrest
in a telephone chat yesterday as according to him, Chukwura was arrested by the
DIG team and not the state police command.
But commenting on the
arrest, Igwe Iweka commended the IGP for dispatching such powerful police teams
to the state to launch this onslaught against criminal elements in the state,
adding that the police should carry out thorough investigations to ascertain
the level of commitment of those under arrest during interrogation.
The monarch who admitted
that criminal activities are on the increase in Obosi, therefore urged the
police to put more efforts in fishing out all the criminal suspects that have
been terrorizing the community and even himself, to the extent that there have
been two botched attempts on his life, while some other innocent indigenes have
been killed.
Also speaking, some
prominent indigenes of Obosi, Chief Charles Umolu, a director in Keystone Bank
and chairman of Obosi community bank and Chief Guy Okechukwu, an Estate
surveyor and valuer, said they learnt that the kingpins of terror in Obosi have
been arrested by the DIG team and expressed the hope that the police would do
their job of sanitizing the state.
They expressed
satisfaction that God has at last sent a neutral police team to come to Anambra
and rescue them from the bondage of some of these alleged criminals who had had a free reign
over the years, adding that they even have a chronicle of the activities of
these men who had posed themselves as being above the law and 'untouchables'.
Outside Obosi like
Ndiokplaeke in Orumba North where children kidnapped from only God knows where
were killed because their parents could not bring ransom have all the bad eggs
swept off.
All the touts engaging
in criminality in Onitsha are now on the run while those unaware of the arrival
of the special police teams in the state have been arrested and are now being
grilled for various allegations ranging from land speculation, cultism, ritual
murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and arms running.
Traditional ruler of Obosi
community, His Majesty, Igwe Chidubem Iweka and some of his cabinet members are
fingered as having named those to pick.
This exercise is coming
barely a week after the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar
dispatched a crack teams of policemen from the police high command led by a
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG, Jonathan Johnson, the Assistant
Inspector-General of Police AIG, in charge of Zone 9, Umuahia, Ballah Nasarawa
and the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Chris Ezike, a Deputy
Commissioner of Police, DCP, as well as OC SARS Anambra state James Nwafor to
pursue criminals away from Anambra for Governor Willie Obiano to work effectively
since security is his priority.
In the last three weeks the OC SARS Anambra state ,

hoodlums believed to be
terrorizing the state arresting over 30 armed robbers and supplier of arms and
ammunition.
