22 years old Mary Paul arrested with two stolen children, Habib Awalu and Unmi
Muritala, abducted in Akure, Ondo State who she wanted to sell for N200,000.
This is even as the children, Seven years old Habib
Awalu and five years old Unmi Muritala kidnapped over three weeks ago in Akure,
the Ondo State capital were handed over to their fathers amidst tears and joy.
The children, Habib a boy, and Unmi a girl were
kidnapped by their one week neighbour, Mary Paul who hails from Iyalla in Cross
River State.
The children were part of the eleven children rescued
from a child trafficking syndicate about two weeks ago by the Imo Police
command.
The suspect, Mary Paul told newsmen that she had just
moved into a one room apartment in Akure, where the children live with their
parents.
According to her, she immediately warmed up to her
neighbours pretending to be very nice and endearing.
"I just moved into the house and pretended to be
nice. One week after, when the parents were in their room, I lured them out of
the compound and immediately left Akure for Owerri, to meet the buyer before
the police caught me here", Mary said.
She disclosed that the buyer promised her N200,000
upon delivery of the children.
When asked why she stole the children, Mary said
" the woman told me it is to help childless couples, she said they will
raise them well and I believed her. But I don't know why I agreed to do it, the
devil was using me and I am very sorry", she said in perfect English.
The Police Commissioner called on parents to be very
vigilant and careful of other people, saying they should always keep an eye on
the children under their care.
He warned people to adopt legitimate means to adopt
children and shun buying of children noting that someday the act will be
exposed and perpetrators will be punished because the long arms of the law will
catch up with them.
Meanwhile, the overjoyed fathers of the children
expressed gratitude to the Police command, showering prayers and gratitude.
