The activities of the wife of the Anambra state Governor,
Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, in taking mad people off from the streets to the rehabilitation
center has paid off as her Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) has
again rehabilitated ten (mad) persons.
The State government has officially handed over the ten
former mentally challenged persons to their families in a solemn ceremony.
The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke performed
the ceremony on behalf of Governor Willie Obiano at the Rehabilitation and
Welfare Center, Nteje in Oyi Council Area.
Ten of them were brought from different streets of
Anambra and rehabilitated by the State government through the Ministry of
Children and Women Affairs.
Deputy Governor Okeke said the program which is
primarily championed by the wife of the Governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano,
through her Caring Family Enhancement Initiative is worth being supported.
He affirmed that the State will continue to engage in
programmes and policies that touch the lives of people of all status, calling
for support to do more.
The Commissioner for Children and Women Affairs, Lady
Ndidi Mezue noted that the initiative is in line with the commitment of the
Governor to maintaining a cleaner State, saying that over one hundred cases
have been successfully taken care of and sent back to their different homes in
Anambra and other neighbouring States.
Lady Ndidi, noted that number of inmates in the home
have increased as a result of regular raid on streets in search of mentally
challenged persons and appreciated those who have been supporting the programme
, assuring commitment to do more with support from the government.
On his part, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe
Akabuike called for behavioural change by the people towards the mentally
challenged persons, emphasizing that cases of mental ailment varies, and
expressed optimism that the center will be upgraded to do more interventions.
Some families of the inmates were full of gratitude to
the government for helping their family members, promising to help reintegrate
them back into the Society.
The Seventy Seven Beds Center is managed by CAFE and
the Ministry of Children and Women Affairs.
Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo
Chukwulobelu, Senior Special Assistants to the Governor, among others were also
present at the event which featured presentation of food items, personal
effects and cash, as well as dance with the Deputy Governor in celebration of
their freedom.
