reports that the Catholic community in Imo State have been thrown into mourning
following the murder of a Priest, Revd
Fr.Jude Egbuom, and another man for allegedly resisting gun bearing car
snatchers in Nkwerre local government area of the State.
The incident occurred Monday night at about 8pm when
the Priest was returning from a barber's salon on the Anara -Nkwerre road in
Nkwerre town, where he had gone to shave when his attackers ambushed him.
Until his death, Fr Egbuom who hailed from Umuwala, in
Nkwerre was the parish priest in charge of St Patrick's Catholic Parish,
Amucha, in Njaba local government area of the state.
A native who pleaded anonymity in the area said the
Priest may have resisted handing over the car keys to his attackers, saying the
action may have infuriated the gunmen who shot him and the other occupant in
the car dead on the spot.
The identity of the man found in the car was yet to be
known as at press time.
The native said further that the late clergyman was
peaceful in his dealings with the people, adding that he could not be involved
in any dealings that could warrant violent killing.
Meanwhile, the State Police spokesman, Andrew Enwerem
has confirmed the death of the Priest, even as he said the command has
commenced investigations to unravel the mystery over the deaths.
According to Enwerem, the Priest was shot in his
cassock alongside the other victim even as he said the State Police
Commissioner, Dasuki Galadanchi has ordered the immediate redeployment of the
Tactical units of the command
He said "The hoodlums shot sporadically in a mall
housing a phone accessories and a barber's salon, unfortunately the Priest was
hit by the bullets as well as the other occupant whose identity is yet to be
confirmed. They also made away with his car", Enwerem said.
He promised that the perpetrators will not go
unpunished saying " though they may hide, but I assure you that we will
nab".
Last year, a Catholic Priest who just returned from
abroad was also shot and disposed of his car, and all three suspects were
rounded up within five days, which included a Policeman.
