week after 74 suspected cultists were arrested for conveying a corpse
laced with pistols, an Owerri magistrate court has ordered their remand
at the Prisons.
Operatives of the Imo State
Police command had intercepted a convoy of mourners conveying the
remains of 39 years old Kingsley Egwim from Rivers State to Amauziri in
Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State , at Tetlow by Bank
Raod in Owerri by cops who were on a stop- and- search duty.
The
police operatives had discovered a pistol with live ammunition in one
of the bus accompanying the corpse, an action that made them match all
the occupants including the ambulance conveying the corpse to the Police
headquarters, where they discovered another pistol with police insignia
in the casket.
The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Andrew Enwerem made the disclosure.
According
to him, the 74 suspects were arraigned on a five count charge ranging
from conspiracy; murder; armed Robbery; cultism; and unlawful
possession of fire arms on Friday.
He explained that the Magistrate ordered they all should be remanded at the overpopulated Owerri prisons.
Meanwhile,
the case file has been sent to the office of Director of Public
Prosecution (DPP) for proper arraignment at the high court, according to
him.
Further,
Enwerem said the State Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi is
committed to stamp out cultism in the State, saying there is no room for
cultism under his watch.
He explained that the Magistrate ordered they all should be remanded at the already overpopulated Owerri prisons.
Meanwhile,
the case file has been sent to the office of Director of Public

A total of two pistols, with one bearing the insignia of the police and 45 live ammunition were found on the mourners.
Meanwhile, the corpse has since been buried while the suspects are at the Owerri prisons.
