Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State; Chief Nsima Udo Ekere, Managing
Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC); and two others
are set to receive honorary Doctorate Degrees from the Federal
University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) this Saturday.
The
others are Sir Tony Ezenna, Chairman of Orange Drugs Limited; and Engr
Andrew Ogaga Ejayeriese, the General Manager, Exploration, Esso
Exploration Production Limited.
The disclosure
was made by the Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Professor Francis Eze during
his pre-convocation press briefing at the school premises yesterday.
He
said the four persons have distinguished themselves in their human
endeavor, and contributed to philanthropy, humanity, and education in
Nigeria.
He stated that all is set for the award of first degrees to 2,325 persons; while 438 persons will be awarded postgraduate degrees and diplomas out of which 36 are first class.
Professor
Eze explained that FUTO has evolved as the acknowledged national leader
in manpower development in Engineering, science and Technology, saying
their graduands constitute the primary supply of skilled manpower to
industries.
The Vice Chancellor bemoaned the activities of unscrupulous persons who destroyed their completed
fence "measuring about 1.5kilometers on the Umuanunu-Obinze axis valued
at N60million", saying it will place a huge burden on the lean finances
of the institution.
Professor
Eze stated that the citadel of learning has full accreditation of her
45 programmes except for two currently on interim accreditation status.
He
announced that FUTO came first in the Open Education Resources ranking
of Nigerian universities organized by the National Universities
Commission (NUC), adding that the school is preparing new programmes for
NUC resources verification.
According
to him, soon, the Department of Forensic Science and Cyber security
will commence, while measures are being developed for a new school of
Computing Information and Communication Technology.
Other
activities scheduled include a convocation lecture on Friday, April 6th
to be delivered by Professor Chudi Uwazurike on the topic " Is another
Nigeria possible: Technological trends, domestic distempers and the big
picture dilemmas for the giant of Africa", by 12noon at the school
premises.
The convocation award ceremony holds on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 at the institution's convocation arena by 10am.
