www.odogwublog.com reports that no fewer than two aides of the wife of Abia State Governor, Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu lost their lives Tuesday when her convoy was involved in a fatal auto crash.
Wife of a former member of
the state House of Assembly, Mrs Promise Uche-Nwamkpa, was brought in
dead to the hospital, while Mrs Nwamaka Maduchukwu gave up while
doctors were battling to resuscitate her with the aid of an oxygen.
Maduchukwu, a widow and mother of four, was a Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor’s Wife and as well the chairperson, State Information Chapel of the Abia Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Scores
of other aides and persons on the convoy were injured and currently
receiving treatment at the Emergency Unit of the Federal Medical Centre
Umuahia.
Some of the injured were said to be in critical condition according to hospital source.
Mrs. Ikpeazu's convoy was said to be returning from Obingwa, her husband's home town when the unfortunate incident occurred.
It
is not yet clear as at the time of filing this report the level of
involvement of the Governor's wife in the crash but some of her top
aides including personal physician and another female doctor were said
to be injured.
According
to eye witness account, the driver of one of the Hummer buses on the
convoy was trying to overtake another vehicle on the convoy when he
suddenly noticed an on- coming vehicle and applied break by force.
The bus was said to have skipped off the road and somersaulted several times, leading to the death of the victims .
One
of her aides, Mrs. Promise Uche Nwankpa, the wife of a former lawmaker
was said to have died on the spot while the Governor's wife's Chief
Information Officer, Mrs. Nwamaka Maduchukwu was said to have died later
at FMC.
The ugly
incident reportedly occurred at Ndiolumbe in Isiala Ngwa North LGA on
the new Aba road, few minutes drive to Umuahia the state capital.
No official statement had been issued from the state Government as at the time of filing this report.
Efforts
to extract any reaction from the Information Commissioner, Chief John
Okiyi Kanu did not yield any fruit as his cell phone line was said not
to be reachable.
State Chairman of NUJ in Abia, Mr John Emejor, who was
at the hospital to sympathize with the victims, has expressed shock and
disbelief over the incident while the former lawmaker, Uche-Nwamkpa, whose wife was a victim was seen weeping
uncontrollably.
