Ebonyi state government has urged parents to immunize their children against some neglected tropical diseases. Coordinator in charge of controlling neglected tropical disease, Cletus Igwe made this call in Ugbodo the council headquarters of Ebonyi local government area during a one day workshop for teachers in the local government.
He said the workshop became imperative following a survey carried out in the state in 2013, which revealed that some LGA's in the state were endemic to four tropical diseases such as schistosomiasis, soil transmited helm, Lymphatic filariasis and liver blindness. According to him, schistosomasis and soil transmitted helm were prevalent in Ebonyi local government area, hence the training of the teachers to treat the school children of the dreaded worms with the administration of praziquanted 600mg tablets.
Igwe warned parents and teachers to keep their children and wards away from stagnant water bodies where the worms are bred, urine and faeces of infected persons, and always use disinfectants while bathing the children.
