Customs seize 11,315 contraband frozen poultry

www.odogwublog.com reports that New Area Controller of Nigeria Customs service, Federal Operations unit, zone C, Owerri, Muhammed Uba Garba, has said that his unit has intercepted a truck loaded with 11,315 cartons of imported frozen poultry products with Duty paid value of N 108,624, 000,00 million.

The Area controller made the disclosure at a news briefing on Thursday in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
He said the truck with the registration number LND 641 XM was impounded on October 31, on the Benin axis with two suspects who are providing them with useful information.

He explained that the intercepted truck has cleverly partitioned with woods, bolted and knotted as a way of trying to beat the custom officers for the illicit business. "The truck was ferrying the contraband goods by the novelty simply known as false bottom method concealment which was criminally fashioned by die hard smugglers to beat the ever vigilant men of the Nigeria customs service", he said.

Garba said the inner layer of the partitioned truck was stockpiled with the contraband frozen poultry products, while the outer layer of the partitions was left to be empty just to deceive the customs officers on duty.

According to him, poultry goods were prohibited because of its unhygienic preservative method which was hazardous to the human health.

The Customs boss urged the members of the public to help the unit with information that will help in reducing the activities of contraband smuggling into the country, saying it will help to keep people healthier.
