ALVAN Students resume, protest N12,800 damage levy

www.odogwublog.com reports that there is tension in Owerre , Imo state capital.
Students of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, Imo state have condemned the levy of N12,800 imposed on them by the school authority for damages, threatening a show down.
The school had announced resumption of school which was closed down for over four months following protests by students over the alleged high handedness of the management which has been denied.
The students had in July, 2016 rioted and accused the school management of being insensitive to their plight, alleging no electricity and water in the hostels, as well as the "no school fees, no exam policy", during which properties were destroyed.
But the management debunked the claims and said that the students went on rampage on the campus because it stopped female students from sleeping in male hostels.
Students who resumed yesterday to prepare for their aborted examination were jolted to learn that they were to pay N12,800 levy and sign an undertaking of good behaviour.
A visit to the school saw students standing in clusters, discussing the development and lamenting how their parents will raise the funds.
Public Relations Officer of ALVAN, Mr Nnaemeka Ijioma when contacted on phone said he cannot confirm the veracity of the levy allegation.
Meanwhile, activities are picking up at the school as students arrive in droves to complete the semester.
