Implications of Mr.
Donald Trump's victory on Nigeria, politically and economically
Oseloka H. Obaze --
a policy and governance expert says:
"Donald Trump ran
against the grain and conventional wisdom by saying offensive things while
pushing his "Let's make America Great again" mantra, which resonated
with the hidden mindset of white mainstream America. He indeed cast
himself as the only one capable of altering the status quo that wasn't working.
Americans then projected all their grouses and anti-establishment feelings into
a hidden support for Trump.
Trump's election has
vast implications for the US, the World and for Africa, Nigeria included.
His utterances and
"America First" proclamation points to greater insularity. Any
foreign foray must have strategic benefits for America. Thus he is likely
to deal with Nigeria in the African context. If his foreign engagement is
purely strategic, it would mean seeking partners like Nigeria to outsource regional
challenges. Depending on his immigration policies, it will favour
Nigerians that need to be regularized.
On Nigeria's socio-economic challenges, we
should expect little or no assistance. Yet, I predict he will visit
Nigeria, within his first four years, something Obama did not do in eight
years."
