Tragedy struck the Federal Housing Estate, 3-3 Onitsha, on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, when three bodies of young men were found dead in a borehole well at No. 1 Henrick Drive of the estate.
Two of the deceased were identified as James and Papa, natives of Akwa Ibom State, who were working with a borehole drilling contractor. The third person was an Hausa man who was hired for a fee of N100,000 to rescue the first two victims, but perished with the duo of James and Papa, inside the borehole.
An eye witness recounted that the first victim, Papa, went inside the pit and got trapped, prompting the second victim, James, to go in to rescue his colleague, but got killed also.
The witness narrated that the contractor, in a bid to rescue the situation, contracted the third victim, an Hausa man, for a fee of N100,000 but he could not live to receive the money.
It was gathered that when that happened, residents raised the alarm and people rushed in and arranged a rescue operation, and was able to recover the three bodies.
Men of the Nigeria Police from 3-3 Police Station led by the Divisional Crime Officer, Philomena Mba, as well as vigilante operatives and men of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, led by Prof. Peter Katchy, were on ground to manage the situation.
Speaking to newsmen at the scene of the incident, Mr. Amos ThankGod and Bassey Etim Efiong, who were brothers to the first two victims, expressed surprise over the incidence.
The duo said, “We have not encountered this kind of thing before. There must be an unseen hand in this development. Any well reasoning person will understand that something is wrong”.
When our reporter made efforts to contact the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nkiruka Nwode, on phone over the development, she characteristically refused to answer her caller; but a source in Onitsha Area Command said that the three corpses would be taken to the hospital for a postmortem.
