NYSC free healthcare service for rural dwellers



The National Youth Service Corps has taken free medical service to communities throughout the 774 Local Government Areas of Nigeria. The 2016 edition of the annual national event, titled, ‘Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers’ (HIRD), was flagged off in Odonoko community in Ijebu – Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State by the Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

The governor, represented by the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Afolabi Afuape, commended the scheme for its foresight and the widening of its horizon through HIRD. Amosun pledged to promote all genuine approaches towards improving on the lives of the people. “I must say that this particular programme is in tandem with the efficient health care delivery programme as a focal point of our 5 cardinal programme contained in our mission to rebuild Ogun State”, he said. 

The governor restated his administration’s commitment to continually support the scheme in rendering beneficial services to Ogun in particular and the nation at large. NYSC Director–General, Brigadier – General Suleiman Zakari Kazaure, in his address at the event, said the goal of HIRD was to mobilize corps medical volunteers in the provision of health interventions through diagnosis, treatment, referrals and proper preventive mechanism thereby enhancing the general wellbeing of rural dwellers across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. 

The NYSC boss added that volunteer corps medical personnel who formed the core of the team would work as health intervention agents in driving the health initiative. Represent by the Director, Community Development Services and Special Project, Mrs. Rhoda Kaka Kwaki, Kazaure expressed appreciation to members of the community for not only opening their doors to accept the programme but for also mobilizing their people to avail themselves of the opportunity to benefit from the initiative.
