www.odogwublog.com reports that it was tears and wailing yesterday at Awka when no fewer than nine persons escaped being killed by a Luxury bus that lost control along the popular zik’s Avenue, Awka.

But over 20 persons allegedly sustained various degrees of injuries in that multiple accident.

Though, no life was lost but over 15 vehicles including many tricycles were seriously damaged in the carnage that involves a luxurious bus with the registration number: HAL 276YG, belonging to a popular motor transport owner in the state.

The driver of the said truck, who is now at large, disappeared immediately the incident occurred as no one set their eyes on the driver when the vehicle eventually stopped.

According to an eye witness, Mr. Oguejiofo Emeka, whose shop at number 241 Ziks Avenue was in ruins said the vehicle was said to have failed break at Nkwo Amenyi market after off loading some tubers of yam and other items at the market.

“Since the Enugu-Onitsha express way became deplorable, most of the heavy duty vehicles have been plying this old road which is not good. Now look at what it has resulted to. This accident, I am sure must have damaged items worth more than N100million.

“In my shop alone, it damaged what is not less than N500,000 because the bus hit the Mecedez car that packed in front of my shop and with the force, it landed on my shop damaging many wares and part of the building itself” he said.

Confirming the figure, the State Commander of Federal Road Safety Corp, Mr. Sunday Ajayi disclosed that nine persons, two females and seven males were rushed to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku by his men, attributing the cause of the multiple accident to a distress vehicle, which he said, resulted to the break failure.

“Break does not fail suddenly, the vehicle got distress and failed break which resulted into the multiple accident. We thank God that no life was lost but the driver is nowhere to be found but we will get him. We increase the risk factor on the road by bringing out unrepaired vehicles on the road, so, I advice road users to keep their safety on their hands” he urged.

At the hospital , a  medical doctor who does not want his name in print told our reporter at the Emergency Unit that the victims were stable, noting that adequate care would be administered.
One of the victims at the hospital, Ms Ifeoma Onwuka, a hair stylist, told our reporter on her hospital bed that she had internal injury as the bus hit them into the gutter from behind.
