A former member of House of Representatives, Chief Ralph Okeke, and a university don, Prof. Robert Nneli , have advocated compulsory skill acquisition for the youths as a panacea for the growing unemployment in the country
Prof. Nneli of University of Ndufu - Alike in Ebonyi State in his paper presented at the Ajandu hall Umueze Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anamnra State particularly called on governments at all levels to initiate skills acquisition programme across the State to end unemployment prob;em in the country.
He, however, pointed out that the rate of unemployment in the country was quite alarming and therefore demoralizing but he encouraged youths to avail themselves of the opportunity of going to school despite the incontrovertible fact that there are no jobs in Nigeria.
The professor of Physiology however stressed the need for every man to learn a skill instead of a job, arguing that a man with "good hand work" would never go hungry but a man with a white collar job could starve..
The former House of Representative member representing Oyi/Anambra West Federal Constituency, who was the chairman of the occassion joined in the call for the youths of today to be versatile by both going to school and learning skills.
He also stressed the need for people to play politics with the fear of God remarking however that Nigerians should learn how to play politics of not blackmailing others as well as enjoined the people of Anambra West Local Local Government Area to respect their politicians and leaders to encourage them to attract democracy dividend to them.
The Editor of The Niger Times Newspaper, Odikpo Mmadubueze who also delivered a Paper at the event noted with disappointment that young people in the area do not take education serious these days, warning that it will spell doom for them in future if f the trend does not chang.
He wondered that .people feel complacent over serious social vices as "impatience, stealing, hooliganism and general crime and criminlity" that are prevalent among the youths. of today.
Mmadubueze maintained that it was yet the duty of parents to inculcate the fear of God and the virture of hard work in their Children. charging the elites to refrain from displaying " callous and discouraging attitude towards the future of the youths".
