Homicide detectives attached to Ogidi Police Division in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state are now hunting for a hit-and-run driver who allegedly knocked down and killed a yet-to-be- identified middle-aged man and fled.

At another scene at Oba, Idemmili South, another hit and run driver knocked a motorcyclist down and ran away. The motorcyclist died at the spot. His identity is yet to be identified before press time.

At Nise, an Ekwulobia Urban mass transit ran into farm land after a head on collusion but no life was lost.

At the Ogidi accident, the police have recovered a Mercedes Benz car belonging to the hit-and-run driver which he abandoned in a ditch near a refuse heap close to the scene of the incident and at the same time moved the corpse of the victim to Iyi-Enu Ogidi Mission Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

The incident, according to a reliable source, occurred Sunday night near the Idemili North Local Government Headquarters, Ogidi when the hit-and-run driver allegedly knocked down the victim and attempted to escape but the force with which the vehicle hit the victim made it to swerve and run into a refuse heap which in turn forced it to fall into a ditch and in a apparent bid to escape, he abandoned the vehicle and fled.

At the scene, workers and security agents attached to the Local Government Headquarters discovered the corpse inside a side drainage as early as they came to work and reported the matter to the police and the Department of State Services, DSS.

However, there was conflicting report that the unidentified victim might have been killed by some criminals who might have picked him up as he was waiting for a vehicle at night, dispossessed him of his money, killed him in one way or the other and threw his corpse into the drainage.

Some security agents attached to the council headquarters, told newsmen that certain personal belongings like wallet found on the victim showed that he might have been a stranger on transit before he was either knocked down by the vehicle or killed by criminals as the case may be, adding that there was a deep cut and blood stain in his fore-head which suggested that he might have been stabbed to death with a broken bottle.

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO at Ogidi, Hassan Musa (CSP), told newsmen on phone yesterday that having recovered the vehicle and taken it to the station, it would be much easier for the police to trace the hit-and-run driver.

Both Chief Tony Egbuji, the Chairman of Idemili North local government chapter of Anambra state vigilante services, AVS and Nwabueze Onwuegbule, the Chief Security Officer, CSO attached to the council secretariat who made a statement to the police about the recovered vehicle, also confirmed the incident to newsmen.
