Herdsmen/farmers crisis: Tsav calls for commission of inquiry

Anti-corruption crusader and elder statesman Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has called on the Federal Government to constitute a commission of inquiry that would find a lasting solution to the farmer/ herdsmen crisis in Benue and other parts of the country.
Speaking to The AUTHORITY on Saturday yesterday in Makurdi, the retired police boss further stated that the herdsmen should not be tagged as terrorists as being canvassed by some Benue elders. Doing so, Tsav insisted, would amount to an infringement on the fundamental rights of the herdsmen emphasizing that the option of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry remained the best.
He wondered why the herdsmen, who from time immemorial had coexisted peacefully with their host communities, have suddenly become notoriously hostile against their host.
"The Federal Government should set up a judicial commission of inquiry into the causes of continued crisis between farmers and herdsmen and find a lasting solution to the needless bloodbath. Without such Judicial Commission of Inquiry the declaration of Fulani herdsmen as terrorist will be too harsh, unlawful and will violate their rights"
He urged governments at various levels not to politicise the crisis but to rather seek for ways through which the unwarranted bloodletting could be curtailed stressing that politicizing the matter would rather aggregate the already fragile situation.
The elder statesman who condoled with the families of those who have lost their loved ones as well as property in the crisis called on the federal and state government to provide facilities at the IDP camps to assuage their sufferings of the displaced person.
