NAFDAC, stakeholders intensify war against fake products

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called on stakeholders in the drug distribution channel in Nigeria to complement its efforts towards ensuring that only wholesome products are consumed in the country.
This call was made on Monday in Amawabia, Anambra State by Mrs Yetunde Oni, and the Acting Director-General of NAFDAC at a one-day Sensitisation Workshop in partnership with Christabel Consultants for members of National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPMED).
Mrs Oni who was represented by NAFDAC Unit Director, Mrs Esenwa said members of NAPMED were crucial to the actualisation of the sanity which various programmes of the agency were made to achieve in the health sector.
She said the most listed but unregistered products especially, herbal products found their ways into shops and markets with claims of what they can cure which at the end of the day results in false claims, and unfortunately the products are advertised on the radio and television.
Delivering a lecture, NAFDAC Zonal Coordinator, South-East Zonal Office Enugu, Mr Dauda Gimba, said that some of the effects of not handling drugs well are treatment failure, complications including organs destruction, adverse drug reactions, increase resistance to drugs, economic waste and deaths with pains for members of the family.
He said there are some drugs that are good in room temperature like paracetamol, but capsules are not compatible with humidity or else it melts and there are others that must be stored in a refrigerator, saying if you do not have the facilities to store them you better avoid dealing with them.
