DIOCESE ON THE NIGER

PRESS RELEASE

BISHOP OWEN NWOKOLO CALLS FOR CALM IN ONITSHA

Following the shutting down of the commercial and business activities in Onitsha and environs yesterday, occasioned by the demonstrations by the IPOB/MASSOB over the issue of Biafra, I wish to appeal for calm in the State and Onitsha in particular.

Both the members of the IPOB holding peaceful demonstrations and security agencies on their trail should maintain the peace currently in Anambra State. The various parties involved should resist any attempt by hoodlums to take advantage of the situation and destabilize any part of Anambra State.

Mischief makers should not also be allowed to disrupt the operations of various markets in Onitsha, while the IPOB leaders and the security agencies should ensure there is no eruption of violence that could lead to breakdown of law and order in the commercial city. Also, all efforts should be made to checkmate actions that could result to religious crisis in the country.

However, there should be a dialogue between the Federal Authorities and the IPOB leaders for a lasting solution to the problem. On our part, we as a church have committed the commercial city and the entire Anambra to God for His intervention.

May the spirit of the upcoming celebrating of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ bring back joy, happiness and greater understanding to the residents of the commercial city and Nigeria in general.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo
Bishop on the Niger
