www.odogwublog.com reports that as part of activities marking the 2015 International Day for the Girl Child, the Ada Igbo Women Development Initiative has flagged-off the “Empower Her Programme” aimed at educating the girl-child on her rights as well as mentoring, empowering and supporting girls in all areas of their development.
The event, which held at the Loretto Science School, Adazi-Nnukwu, with the theme “The Power in You” is hoped to inspire and evoke girls to discover their many innate talents and to appreciate their potentials in order to make significant impact in the society.
In an address, the Executive Director of the Ada Igbo Women Development Initiative, Miss Uzoamaka Eze, described girls as the powerhouse of creativity, full of potentials and talents and urged the students to always work harder to become what they want in life as according to her, the power is in their hands.
While identifying education as the best tool and passport to the future, Miss Eze urged the girls to embrace education so as to avoid intimidations, become future leaders, own their businesses and build good homes which children would contribute to the socio-economic development of the country through their good morals.
In a remark, the Manager, Loreto Special Science School, Reverend Father Hilary Nwajagu, noted that gone were the days when women were mere house wives and charged the girls to draw inspirations from the women who have made indelible inputs in the world.
The keynote Speaker, Mrs. Kaka Oyinbo, noted that the girl – Child still suffers congenital injustices and is highly disadvantaged solely on the basis of her gender, which leads to the deprivation of her fundamental rights.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the Senior Prefect of the School, Miss Mary Okoro, thanked the Executive Director of the Ada-Igbo Women Development Initiative, for affording them the opportunity to discuss salient issues pertaining to womanhood and promised that they will use the knowledge garnered from the event to building and equip themselves for the future.
The event featured question and answer session and the cutting of the flag-off cake.
