www.odogwublog.com reports that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state on Monday announced that his government would offset the hospital bills of the 21 accident survivors of the Umuchu carnage that left 15 people dead. Umuchu is in Aguata local government area.
But the Nigerian police, Anambra command through its PPRO Okechukwu Ali although confirmed the accident, he said only 11 people were confirmed dead while 21 were injured. He said the injured are receiving treatment in various hospitals including Enugu state.
Obiano was at the scene about 9:30 am and was received by the traditional ruler of Umuchu, Igwe Godson Ezechukwu and the PPA Leader in Anambra state/Philanthropist, Mr Godwin Ezeemo as well as two House of Assembly members representing Aguata constituency Hon Dr Ikechukwu Umeh and Hon Ikem Uzoezie among others.
The FRSC Commandant in Anambra Sunday Ajayi and his Security Adviser , Chikodili Anara among others accompanied the Governor.
Obiano further condoled with the people of Umuchu and informed that he has discussed with the FRSC to impound overloaded vehicles and vehicles not road worthy. He said three things must have caused the accident—either over speeding, overloaded or that the driver was drunk.
The Truck ran into 5 vehicles including a Bus, a Jeep, a Gulf and one other car as well as 5 motorcycles were smashed. The timber it was carrying smashed into the Afor Ibughubu Umuchu scattering so many stalls.
The villagers were already identifying the corpses as 6 were identified as at press time including Okwuogu, IIfeanyi Uba, Chukwudi Ogwo, Okwuezie Ikeosu, and Onyekwe Enyeremonu. Others were passers bye in Ekwulobia Urban Mass Transit bus with Registration number Edo AFZ 319 XA as well as other passing by vehicles.
It was reported that a truck with registration number Enugu LG 66BBG government plate number driver lost control of the vehicle after its brake failed and rather than enter the gutter of off road continued on the road and ran into the crowd celebrating new yam festival and motorists going their way at Ibughubu Umuchu killing many.
The incident happened at a village market known as Afor in Ibughubu, Umuchu in Aguata local government at about 5.30 pm.
The Aguata council area chairman, Sir Chukwuma Umeoji commended the people of Umuchu for being civil as they picked the driver of the trailer and handed him over to the police adding that in some communities the man would have been lynched and his trailer set ablaze.
Igwe Umuchu , Godson Ezechukwu thanked the Governor for showing concern and informed the Governor that the community last week arrested a kidnap from Osumenyi who came to Umuchu with the victim to hide but they arrested him and handed over to the police.
Speaking also the PPA Leader in Anambra and a Philanthropist, Mr Godwin Ezeemo consoled the families who lost their beloved ones and appealed to motorists to always apply caution while on the road as many accidents are avoidable.
