NHRC probes alleged demolition of houses in Enugu

South-East Zonal Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Mrs. Uche Nwokocha, said the commission will investigate allegations of illegal demolition of houses in Enugu.
Nwokocha disclosed this on Monday in Enugu during a meeting with victims of the alleged illegal demolition that affected 15 buildings at Ngenevu and Bunker areas.
She said the commission had received a protest letter from the victims, adding that she would visit the site on October 1 for on-the-spot assessment.
Nwokocha noted that the commissioner of police, attorney general and commissioner of justice, as well as officials of the Enugu Capital Development Authority would be invited to ensure fair hearing.
She said the commission would do its best to ensure justice to all parties involved in the matter.
One of the property owners, Mrs. Elizabeth Eke, said the buildings were allegedly demolished by one Mr. Eric Chime, who claimed to have bought the property.
Eke noted that the structures were dully registered with the State Ministry of Lands and Urban Development, stressing that the demolished structures were inhabited mostly by widows, farmers, low income earners and retirees.
She alleged that lives of residents of the area were in danger, following incessant threats by some private security guards employed by Chime.
It was gathered that Chime had at a separate meeting claimed to have bought the property from the Bureau for Public Enterprises.
