UN chief demands unconditional release of Chibok girls

President Muhammadu Buhari meets with UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon on August 24, 2015.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-Moon has called for the unconditional release of the abducted Chibok girls.

Ban made the call on Monday, August 24, 2015, after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The UN boss also commended Buhari on his anti-corruption war saying “When you change Nigeria, you have also changed Africa.”

Buhari on his part thanked Ban Ki-Moon for inviting him to attend the UN General Assembly holding in New York on September 27 and 28.

The Chibok girls were abducted by Boko Haram militants on April 14, 2014 and most of them remain in captivity.

A faction of the sect is meanwhile said to have approached the Nigerian government for negotiations using the missing girls as its bargaining chip.

Buhari had said, during a visit to the US in July, that he would not rule out negotiating with the sect in a bid to the get the girls back.
