As part of events marking the opening ceremony of the 2015 UNIZIK Staff Games and Recreation, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS beat the Director of Sports, Mr. Amechi Makassi and the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. E.C Agbanusi to win the Gold medal in the Table Tennis game.

Speaking before the match, Prof. Ahaneku expressed his delight in the opening ceremony for the 2015 Staff Sports activities in the University. According to him, exercise will help to keep all physically fit and help in longevity of life and proper articulation at work. He urged all Units and Faculties to participate actively with a positive competitive spirit. He opined that there will be enhancement in prizes to be won compared to what obtained in previous years. He thanked all staff especially the dedicated ones and prayed God to give all the grace and strength to key into the University’s dream, which is taking UNIZIK to a greater height.

The Director of sports, Mr. Amechi Makassi thanked the sports loving VC for his support and encouragement. He said that the sporting activities will bring about good relationship among colleagues. The competition, he said, will last till November and be of three phases. Phase I will be competition between Units and Faculties. Phase II will be creative activities while phase III will be the climax culminating into the grand finale. He, therefore, called on all to participate so that no Unit/Faculty will be left out.

In his vote of thanks, the Director of Infrastructure and Development, Dr. Godson Okafor thanked the VC for allowing a continuation of the sporting calendar in the University. He said that with the VC’s participation and support, this year’s Staff games will turn out to be the best in history. The sports, he said, will avail all the opportunity to exercise in order to keep fit.
Highlight of the ceremony was the official return of the 2014 Edition of staff games trophies from the winners; Security Department, Registry Unit and Faculty of Environmental Sciences to the Vice-Chancellor. The Registrar, Barr. C.C. Okeke read out the oaths; Maryann Nweke of Faculty of Arts took the oath of compliance to the rules and regulations on behalf of athletes while Mr. Anthony Udennaka took oath of free and fair officiating on behalf of the officials.
