It is very heart-warming that at a time our country’s education is beset with a plethora of challenges and perceived nosedive, Marist Comprehensive College Nteje, Anambra State has continued to offer hope for the resuscitation of this sector by decidedly exhibiting excellence beyond imagination. Chukwudi Anagbogu of the Department of English Language of the school takes a look at highs of the school especially in the recent past.
A Brief History of the School
Founded in the year 2000, Marist Comprehensive College, Nteje is a Catholic Education Institute which comprises Junior Secondary one to three, as well as senior secondary one to three. A co-educational college, it is owned and managed by The Marist Brothers of the Schools, Province of Nigeria, Religious Institute in the Catholic Church whose mission is Education of the youth, especially the financially disadvantaged. Marist Comprehensive Institute is one of the numerous academic institutions (secondary and tertiary) owned and ran worldwide by The Marist Brothers of the Schools, founded by St. Marcellin Champagnat (1789-1840) in January 2, 1817. Situated in a serene environment, commanding a beautiful ambience, the school is located at Umuanunwa Nteje, five kilometres from Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The school has undergone series of metamorphosis over the years. Notwithstanding the usual bottlenecks and challenges ssociated with running an institution especially from its inception, the pioneer management of the school led by the Pioneer principal Rev. Br. Ifeanyi Mbaegbu weathered storm and laid a solid foundation for the successes we witness today. His successor,Rev. Br. Okey Anochie maintained the tempo of all round development before handing over the baton to the incumbent, Rev. Br. Mark Iwu who, with the support of the Provincial Superior Rev. Br. Joachim Ezetulugo has steadied the ship of continuous academic and infrastructural development of the school.
ACADEMICS
At just fourteen years of its existence, M.C.C.N has carved out a niche for itself in the areas of academics and general discipline, to the extent that parents fall over themselves to get their wards enrol in the school. The school has been posting excellent results in the WASSCE as well as the Basic Education Certificate examinations. In 2014, a student of the school Oguejiofor Onyinye bagged nine distinctions in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to emerge the best throughout the federation. A lot of honours have been won by both the past and present students of the school. The management of the school emphasizes on self-reliance and discipline. Thus, examination malpractice is alien to the students. They plough hardwork, diligence and excellence into all they do, and these rub off on their performance.
