ONITSHA North Council chairman, Douglas Egbuna has described Governor Willie Obiano's quick
response to emergencies as a clear demonstration of his firm commitment to safety and welfare of the state citizenry.
Speaking to newsmen in his office at Onitsha, Barr. Egbuna remarked that in such responses, the governor always exhibit those rare attributes of love, sympathy and uncommon concern to the victims.
The Onitsha North Council boss recalled some emergency cases such as the accident that occurred at the Unizik Junction in Awka, the one at Amawbia Roundabout along the express and that of Nkpor Junction as well as the accident that involved a petrol tanker that claimed many lives at the Upper Iweka, Onitsha, and pointed out that on those incidents, the governor wasted no time in getting to the scene and personally assisted the victims, making sure that the injured were immediately rushed to hospital.
The chairman expressed satisfaction that in spite of his busy schedule, the State chief executive spared no time in intervening in such matters even as he enjoined the citizenry especially drivers and tricycle and motorcycle operators to obey road safety rules, and borrow a leaf from the governor's example by giving a helping hand to accident victims.
While describing peace and security as veritable tools for socio economic development, Barr. Egbuna commended the governor for taking all necessary steps to curb accidents and crime by establishing the unique and unprecedented Joint Security Outfit, and banning keke Napep and motorcycle operators from operating along some designated routes in the state. He remarked that his intervention in security has set a standard that would remain a reference point in the fight against criminals.
He renewed his call on Ndi Anambora to give unflinching support to the Obiano administration to ensure sustainability of its development efforts and admonished staff of his local government to be dedicated to duty, and to shun truancy, absenteeism and even lateness to duty, stressing that the present state administration has no room for indolent workers.
According to Egbuna, in the present circumstance when white collar job is globally extinct, many countries grappling with harsh economic situation like budget deficits, financial bailout, inflation and massive unemployment following the 2008 global financial crisis, and the current drop in oil price world over, civil servants must be serious with their work and show dedication to duty at all times.
