NEWLY sworn-in governor of Enugu state, Rt.
Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has re-assured the people of the state of his commitment
to rural development with transformation of Nsukka top on the list.
Ugwuanyi said that his administration would pay a
special attention to rural development because majority of the people live in
the rural areas.
He
said, “we will create more urban areas
to boost economic growth . In line with this, we must equip and modernize
Nsukka- a University town founded over half a century ago- to compete with
other University towns in attracting technology and knowledge-based business
and other industrial support ventures, bearing in mind that Nsukka is the
second largest town in Enugu state.”
The
governor also said that, “the 9th mile corner was an overlooked economic hub
that we need to harness to enjoy the full benefits of our newly acquired status
as a Free Trade Zone”. He noted that his administration will give attention to
these places to speed up urban development, create fresh economic opportunities
and reduce pressure on Enugu metropolis, adding that they will boost the Enugu
city by opening up the Independence Layout phase2, Abakpa Nike, Emene and other
satellite towns to compliment the proposed industrial park.
The
governor also assured that his administration will partner the private sector,
not only in housing development but also in agricultural development and
industrialisation and he assured investors of a conducive environment, saying
that people who were ready to enter into strategic partnership to develop Enugu
State should come as his administration will provide the necessary legal and
policy framework to make investment thrive.
Acknowledging the present economic challenges being faced in the
country, Governor Ugwuanyi urged
Nigerians to look inwards and harness other economic potentials of Enugu State.
On
revenue generation, he said, “every revenue-generating agency of government
should be ready to generate and remit revenues to fund government development
effort. Likewise, individuals and corporate entities should henceforth start
paying taxes as defaulters will not be counted as friends of Enugu State.
But
one thing I must assure you is that every kobo you put into the coffers of
government will be utilized transparently and in a way that adds value to your
lives. Earlier, the out-gone governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime thanked the
people of Enugu state for their prayers and support during his eight years rule
of the State and urged them to support the new governor.
