Thirty-one-year-old Anthony Okeke who was facing a one-count charge of alleged attempt to kidnap
former governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime, has gained freedom at last.
Vanguard’s investigation showed that the young man became a free man a few days before Governor Chime handed over power to the incumbent governor, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Although the courts were on strike but he was specially brought to the court on the order from the ‘above’ where he was asked to go home.
It was, however, not ascertained if the charge earlier pressed against him had been discontinued totally.
Family sources confirmed that he was free and this was also further confirmed by an Enugu-based rights activist, Mr. Ayo Omatayo, who had been championing the cause for his freedom.
Omatoyo had two weeks before his release, wrote to the former governor on the issue, followed by another letter from Amnesty International.
Anthony was arrested by security details for breaking into the convoy of Enugu State governor with his vehicle around 11.30pm on February 22, 2015, and was, thereafter, charged to court almost immediately for attempted kidnap of the governor.
