NAPS faults N9bn proposed allowance for NASS members

Leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS, has kicked against the
proposed wardrobe allowance of approximately N9 million to each of the eighth National Assembly members which would amount to about N9 billion.
National Senate President of the association, Comrade Salahudeen Lukman, who faulted the move at a press conference at the weekend, described the proposal as bogus and unethical, considering the fall in global oil price and the current financial status of the nation.
He maintained that the proposal was unacceptable by the entire Nigerian students and advised the lawmakers to reverse the proposal in the interest of peace, tranquility and deliverance of good governance as promised by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
“Considering the economic reality of our dear nation we demand the review of this allowance to minimal bearable point if not total cancellation, then 70 per cent reduction of wardrobe and all other allowances.”
The students leader posited that Nigerians would be most grateful if such proposed fund was use to revive the Kaduna and Kano textile factories as a sacrifice from the legislators to rebuild Nigeria to enhance production of more quality textile materials in the country and create employment for the teeming unemployed youths.
Lukman averred that it was immoral for the national assembly to make such a proposal when some Nigerians in more than 15states of the federation could not afford daily bread as a result of bankruptcy of the affected states’ treasury resulting to inability to pay workers salaries for close to 9 months.
“The era of corruption must end in our country, impunity and injustice must stop. As much as the poor pays tax we must judiciously manage and monitor our resource,” he stressed.
