Fire razes Timber market Umuokpu, over N100 Million worth of materials destroyed

burnt to ashes as early night fire razes timber and carpenters sheds otherwise known as Ukwu Ogbu carpenters shed, located at number 9 Oraogbu street. Umudioka, Awka Anambra State.


Eye witness account said the fire was noticed around 9 pm Tuesday night, and later the state fire service men arrived but could not put off the ‘blazing fire’, as a result of water shortage.


When this reporter got to the seen around 9am this morning, one of the fire victims Azubike Eze lamented that their loses was colossal, running into several millions of naira, as some of the shop owners looked in consternation.

According to Eze, how do u qualify the losses- several machines employed by carpenters working tools to execute their job, house hold furniture being contracts awarded to some of them, office furniture chairs and tables

Eze said others included leather materials (MBF), school furniture, plants for doing different jobs, ply wood etc were all burnt to dust, adding that their shed

There were many versions as to the cause of the fire accident, but three major opinion pointed accusing fingers to a neighbour’s compound where bonfire was burning around 6PM before the fire incident.

A victim who spoke on condition of anonimity said one of them quickly rush to that yard to complain, and they actually stopped the burning of whatever but quickly added that unnoticed things of fire might have penetrated and spread to sawdust and other wooden wastes nearby.


“This then developed, spread unnoticed and burnt down their shed,” our source said.

Meanwhile, suspected fire spreading from sawdust and burning spot later burnt down the building.


As at the time of filing this report, some sympathizers and relatives of victims were seen gathering in group’s discussing the fire incident, while many of those affected lamented their loses.
