THE Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has intercepted 10 containers of suspected fake baby diapers
worth over N200million allegedly imported by three Chinese nationals. The siezures took place at Railway Terminus, Ijora Olopa, Lagos.
The Director of
Inspectorate and Compliance Department of the organisation, Bede Obayi, told
newsmen in Lagos that the suspects had been handed over to the police for
further investigation and prosecution.
Obayi said that
various brands and unbranded baby diaper suspected to be fake, adulterated were
found in 10 containers allegedly brought into the country by the suspects. He
said that the stuffing of the products was done in an unhygenic environment and
was capable of inflicting skin rashes and diseases when used on children.
“We intercepted the
fake products through our intelligent efforts. We have seen that the products
are poor in quality, they are fake, substandard and dangerous to our babies.
“Because of the
nature of the product, which is sensitive, they should not be allowed to be
packaged in this kind of environment. “If we allow the product into our
markets, they will cause damages to our babies,” he said.
Obayi said that the
organisation had redoubled its efforts to stamp out substandard products from
circulating in the country.
In another
development, Automobile spare parts and machinery dealers and importers have
lamented the fluctuation of exchange rate on their businesses.
Speaking with
National Light at the official opening of the newly constructed automobile
spare parts market at the International Trade Fair Complex, Lagos, the dealers
under the auspices of United Allied Spare Parts Dealers Association (UASPDA)
complained about the effect of the high exchange rate on importation.
The Chairman of the
association, Bartholomew Achukwu said the fall of the naira against major
international currencies has adversely affected his members' business.
He said, “Fluctuation of the dollar has affected our
business. Some of our members have lost huge amount of money as cost of
importing goods into the country has risen.”
He however asked the
federal government to encourage exportation in order to strengthen the naira
against the dollar. Speaking on the new market that was officially declared
opened; he said the association decided to have its own market after the lease
agreement at the ASPAMDA market expired.
