ASUP declares trade dispute with Federal Polytechnic, Oko ---gives management 2 weeks ultimatum to shut down the Poly

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Academic staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal
Polytechnic, Oko chapter yesterday declared industrial action.
In a letter to the Rector of Polytechnic, Prof Godwin Onu, signed by the General Secretary of ASUP Francis Ime Okon, ASUP gives management of the Polytechnic two weeks ultimatum to attend to issues it raised or face total industrial action.
The letter copied to the National President, ASUP,  Zonal Coordinator, ASUP Zone D, Chairman, Governing Council and Registrar was made available to Orient Daily.

The letter read thus:’’ Congress is constrained to issue Management a two-week ultimatum to address all the issues raised. Congress urges Management to meet these demands in the interest of peace and welfare of members as well as for the progress of the polytechnic education or face avoidable total industrial action.
‘’The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Oko Chapter in its meeting of 25th May 2015 at the ETF Building of the Polytechnic reviewed critically the state of the Polytechnic especially as it affects teaching/learning as well as welfare of members. Congress found the prevailing situation incompatible with what obtains in other polytechnics in the country in particular and the aims of the polytechnic education in general. Congress was particularly piqued by the inflexibility of Management as regards remedying the following issues:

‘’(a)              Non-recognition of the Union and its Executive Council despite the fact they were validly elected through the supervision of National Officers of the union of which outcome was communicated to Management;
‘’(b)             Non-release and remittance of the Union's check-off dues constitutionally provided in labour laws;
‘’(c)              Unjustified dismissal of the Chapter Chairman Mr. Godson Okeoma from the employ of the polytechnic. This is in addition to the unjustifiable general intimidation, issuance of queries, warnings, termination and withdrawal of appointments to ASUP members wrongly perceived to be enemies of Management as a result of the CBT/OMR examination modes.
‘’(d)             Incidences of Academic fraud relating to examinations/results in the polytechnic occasioned by the failed substandard CBT/OMR examination modes;
‘’(e)              The appointment of unqualified officers into principal as well as sensitive positions in the school which runs at variance with the Polytechnic Act.
‘’(f)               The failure of Management to abide by the earlier agreement reached and signed with the Union of which the Rector is a signatory.

‘’Congress as stakeholders in the fortunes of the Polytechnic and having critically examined the above issues, recalled that all the issues have been thoroughly and repeatedly brought to the attention of Management without remedy. Based on the above, Congress resolved that an urgent rectification of these issues cannot be more compelling. Consequently, Congress is constrained to issue Management a two-week ultimatum to address all the issues raised. Congress urges Management to meet these demands in the interest of peace and welfare of members as well as for the progress of the polytechnic education or face avoidable total industrial action.
