Trouble looms for Water producers in Anambra state as NAFDAC threatens to sanction erring producers

www.odogwublog.com reports that the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) yesterday raised alarm on the quality of table and sachet water products in Anambra state.

NAFDAC has embarked on testing for 20 perimeters (elements) during a Quality Water Monitoring Exercise in the state.
NAFDAC observed that water producers in Anambra state would be sanctioned for failing to participate in the on-going water testing exercise.

The Coordinator of NAFDAC in Anambra, Dr Christiana Esenwah, gave the warning on Tuesday during the commencement of the two-weeks NAFDAC Quality Water Monitoring Exercise held at Tonimas Table Water in Neni community, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra.

Esenwah noted that the exercise was meant to safe-guard the general public against unwholesome table and sachet water, which is currently used by most residents of the state.

``My advice is for them (table and sachet water producers) to come close because this is a product they all consume; their families, friends; in fact the entire community is consuming that product (water).

``And they should not assume that all is well.

``Because coming here today, one would think that everything, all perimeters are well judging from what we (NAFDAC) have in the file.

``But after the test we discovered that one perimeter especially was nothing to write home about.

``For that reason I would advice every other water producer not to run away.

``Because this is an avenue where you really discover what your product is made up of,’’ she said.

Esenwah said that the agency was ready to assist and collaborate all water producers in Anambra to produce wholesome and quality water.

``We are not here to throw people out of business or job but to aid you get it right and continue in your business; especially as we know that water producing business is one of the striving cottage businesses in the country,’’ she said.

Speaking, the NAFDAC Water Testing Consultant, Mr Emmanuel Osiegbu, said that the agency was carrying out physic-chemical analysis as well as collecting samples for micro-biological analysis from water producers in Anambra.

Osiegbu, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Emani Global Network Ltd, said :``Our responsibility here is not only to analyze; but we try to work with the manufacturers to correct them and after which they would bring back the sample for re-testing to make sure that what we asked them to correct has been done in order to get quality and wholesome water.

``And we have the equipment and man-power to run 25 samples of test a day and we are testing for 20 perimeters (elements),’’.
