Red Cross lauds electorates for peaceful, matured conduct in polls

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Nigerian Red Cross Society yesterday lauded the Nigerian
electorates for a peaceful and matured conduct notwithstanding human and mechanical shortfalls of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the Presidential and National Assembly polls.
The Vice-Chairman of Red Cross, Anambra State Chapter, Prof. Peter Katchy, told newsmen in Onitsha that the organization did not record any incident of emergency, violence or misbehaviour during the period of the election.

Katchy said that though there were clear cases of shortfalls on the part of INEC and its officials, but the electorates were patient and sympathetic to the electoral body.

He said the co-operation was so much that people have to assure INEC official of their willingness to stay until their challenges were sorted out.

``In most of the places we have visited today, there has not been violence; people have conducted themselves very well.

``There is no rancor, there is no quarrel at all; the people were very anxious again to cast their votes; they want to exercise their franchise, that is what I noticed today.

``And that is very good about this particular election.

``People are anxious to vote, people are anxious to cast their vote and they are not interested in any trouble.

``And we have not seen anybody that is fomenting trouble or try to foment or plan for anything.

``The voters are very happy, the voters are not even antagonistic to the INEC officials; rather, they are sympathetic with the INEC official over the handicap of the card reader,’’ he said.

Katchy said that the peaceful conduct of Nigerians during the election would show the entire World ``how we cherish to live together as one indivisible entity’’.

``I am sure this peaceful conduct of Nigerians at the election will tell the World volumes of our political-will and willingness to move forward,’’ he said.
