As campaigns for Saturday’s presidential elections end today, Igbo lawyers have been
urged to cast their ballots for re-election bid of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
Former Anambra state governor and Deputy Director-General, South East, Goodluck Jonathan Presidential Campaign Organization, Mr. Peter Obi, made this call at the monthly meeting of Otu Oka-Iwu Lagos, an umbrella body of lawyers of Igbo extraction.
Mr Obi who represented President Jonathan at the occasion said that the president had done extremely well to deserve a second term in office.
According to him, this will enable him take his transformative rule to a completion, adding that the time has come for Ndigbo to speak with one voice, that what is being proposed as the alternative to Jonathan did not hold much promise.
He noted that the South East can now boast of an international airport courtesy of the Jonathan Administration, adding that the Enugu-Onitsha Road and Enugu-Port Harcourt Road would soon wear a new look.
Obi stated that the change needed was not “change in personnel” but a structural change of the federation as proposed by the National Conference.
He pointed out that the president had courageously convened the National Conference, adding that implementation of the conference report towards a true federalism was at the root of Jonathan’s second term bid.
Warning that greed was a major tonic that fueled corruption, noting that Nigerians unwittingly encourage corruption by celebrating persons who engage in wanton accumulation of wealth through dubious means.
On the promise by All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag-bearer, General Mohammadu Buhari to tackle Boko Haram head-on, the former governor observed that Buhari, as a former Head of State had direct access to the President, and he did not have to wait till after the elections to assist the Federal Government in securing the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls and re-uniting them with their families.
Obi assured that the rule of law would continue to be given a pride of place in the Jonathan Administration, adding that the concerns noted by the lawyers would receive high-level attention.
Following a standing ovation accorded him after his speech, Mr. Mbanugo Udenze thanked Obi for the recognition accorded the association.
