No fewer than 100 bodies were found in a mass grave
on the outskirts of Damasak town in Borno State on Friday.
A Chadian army spokesman told Agence France-Presse
that the head of several of the victims had been cut off.
The report added that soldiers discovered the
bodies under a bridge outside the town, which was retaken from Boko Haram
militants on March 9 by troops from Chad and Niger.
“There are about 100 bodies spread around under the
bridge just outside the town,” said Colonel Azem Agouna. He added that he had
visited the spot himself.
Report had it that about 30 Nigerien and Chadian
soldiers were injured during a fight to retake the town from the militants few
days ago.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on Friday said he
was gratified that many people in the troubled states had been experiencing
greater levels of security occasioned by the efforts of the military.
“Yesterday, I visited Yobe and Borno states. Though
there remain some challenges, I am gratified that my people in both states are
experiencing greater levels of security due to the efforts of our gallant
military. May God bless Nigeria,” Jonathan wrote on his Facebook page on
Friday.
