Meanwhile,the two polling units in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, witnessed a massive turnout of voters as residents joined other Nigerians to elect their President and National Assembly members on Saturday.

The polling units, 021 and 022, were located side by side in an open space that serves as a parking lot for convoys of the VIPs visiting the seat of power.

Although voters started arriving at the centre as early as 7am, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission saddled with the responsibility of conducting the elections only reported at 10am.

They had a hectic time trying to control voters who had thronged the voting centre.

Security operatives attached to the Presidential Villa had to join hands with security agents posted to the units to keep the voters orderly.

Many of the voters brought mats and chairs from home, an indication that they were prepared to wait for as long as possible.

They defied the scorching sun to join long the queues for accreditation.

Accreditation finally started at about 10.30am, exactly two and a half hours behind schedule, and it was hitch-free.

There were some cases of people whose fingerprints could not match the ones on their cards as shown by the card readers.

In such cases, electoral officers had to use the manual register.

“I have been voting in this unit since 1999 but none of the past elections had witnessed this kind of huge turnout here today,” a security operative who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent.

Among dignitaries sighted at the polling units are Senator Khairat Gwadabe; a former minister, Kanu Agabi; and the Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Joan Ayo. Meanwhile, petty traders made a brisk business at the polling units.

They sold chilled bottled water and soft drink for voters who were already dehydrated by the scorching sun.

A woman was also seen selling rice in take-away packs while another was selling moin moin.
