reports that the Provost Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe (NOCEN), Dr.
Ego Uzoezie, has during the 34th NCE/18th B.ED, regular
and sandwich students’ matriculation ceremony
held at the convocation arena of
the college recently proved to be a woman of due process, as the Provost’s
procession accompanied by the Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and
other administrative officers kept to time and filed out to the Convocation
arena of the institution for the annual academic ritual.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Uzoezie reiterated
the stand of the college in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka,
saying the management’s eagle eyes are effective enough to discover student
involved in any social vice such as cultism, exam malpractice, drug and rape.
She praised the students for their success
during the admission process, and urged them to tow the footsteps of great men
and women who had passed through the College on their path to eminence. She
cautioned the fresh students against the notion that attendance to lectures was
not essential. Rather, he stressed that, “all students must attend 75 per cent
of all lectures in order to qualify to write examinations in the courses.”
Uzoezie further noted that the drive of her
administration is to transform the College and that by the end of her tenure;
it would have become one of the best in Nigeria, even as she reminded the
students that in occasion like these, there is always need for sober reflection
on the path they have chosen, adding that, “this new status of yours carries
immunities, privileges and as well as responsibilities”.
Her words:”Gold is a precious ornament which is
highly demanded because it glitters. It glitters not in its original form as
dug-out from the ground. It glitters only after it had gone through the
processes of heating and refinement. So it is in the road to academic success
which requires self-discipline, hard work and perseverance”.
At the event which had in attendance a long list
of erudite professor from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, top government
functionaries, clergy men among others, the Provost noted that the college
deals with teaching, learning and research for the attainment of excellence.
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor University of
Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, able represented by Prof. U.C
Umoh, emphasized the need for the students to be guided with the principle of
honesty, self-discipline, faith, perseverance and service to the people. Adding
that all these will make always enable them to make the right choices in their
march to academic attainment in the college.
He urged the students to always uphold the
ideals of the institution by their commitment to the pursuit of academic
excellence for the restoration of the dignity of man. “
While administering the oath of loyalty on the
students, the Ag.Registrar Mr Godwin Okeke urged the students to live up to the
institution’s expectations, even as he warned them again not to engage in
examination malpractices and other social vices.
“While congratulating you for this achievement,
I urge you to make the best use of the golden opportunity presented by your
admission into this collenge. You need to stay conscious of the expectations of
your parents as well as the enormous sacrifices they are making to see you
through school at this point in time. You must, therefore, make a personal
commitment not to let them down,” he said.
Some of the fresh students, who spoke to www.odogwublog.com,
expressed determination to excel in their academic work, while they also
pledged to abide by the rules and regulations of the college.
One of them, Nwuko Ogechukwu Gladdys, Department
of Education Biology, expressed gratitude to God for her to have scaled through
the rigour of the college’s admission process. ”I cannot just quantify my
happiness today because my admission into this institution of academic
excellence is more of a privilege than luck,” saying: “My expectations are high
for the journey ahead; to be a woman of character and great reputation at the
end of it all.”
The joy of Okwuonu Frncis Chibuike, Department
political science, knew no bounds. He said: “NOCEN/UNN is enviable institutions
of learning any student will be proud to associate with even friends from other
institutions regard its students as special. I feel so excited and fulfilled.
He expressed gratitude to God and the college management for finding her worthy
of admission.
