Peoples Democratic Party
candidate for Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Emmanuel Nweke has
said that the campaign law passed by Anambra government was in the interest of
democracy reports www.odogwublog.com
Nigerian Pilot recalled
that the Anambra House of Assembly, two weeks ago passed a law entitled
“Breaches of the Peace and Unlawful Assemblies Law”.
The law sought to
prohibit campaigns by aspirants whose names were not on the list of candidates
cleared by the Independent National Elections Commission (INEC) to stand for
elective posts in the coming general elections.
But the Peoples
Democratic Party Candidate, Uche Ekwunife and the Party itself condemned the
law saying Obiano has no such powers even as the National body of the PDP
mandated its member to go about campaigning for the party to win at the polls
as they know who their candidate is.
However, Nweke who gave
his support for the law while speaking with newsmen in Awka said the law was
for sanity of the political space in the state and should be supported by all.
He added that he did not
see it as legislation in favour of any political party or to put others at a
disadvantage.
Going by the guidelines
of INEC, you are not supposed to campaign if not cleared, because it amounts to
deceit, it can instigate violence and only INEC which oversees the electoral
processes is the only body that can announce candidates who are qualified to
contest election.
“I support it fully, it
is a law that is made out of circumstance, I do not see it see it as a law made
to favour of ay party or put the other at a disadvantage it is a law against
illegally and it is essentially for the survival of democracy, for decency in
the political space,” he said.
Nweke, said he was the
candidate of the PDP recognized on the INEC list, adding that the leadership of
the party was clear in Anambra under Chief Ejike Oguebego, and called on party
members to allow peace to reign in Anambra chapter of the party.
He promised to deliver
quality representation to the people of Awka North and south constituency if
elected a, while lamenting the underdevelopment of the Anambra capital town.
The candidates urged the
people to massively for President Goodluck Jonathan and connect themselves to
the mainstream by voting out opposition and ensure other PDP candidates
won as to attract the attention of federal government.
“My mission is to give
quality representation because I have the ability to stand and demand for what
is due to them and also interface with my people on a regular basis so that I
will be able to feel their pulse.
“My ambition is all
about my people, attract federal presence and deliver dividends of democracy to
them, every federal constituency has a stake in the Nigerian project and should
fairly.
“Let me make it
categorical clear that there are no factions in Anambra PDP, it has been a made
categorically clear that the chief Ejike Oguebego and his executives are the
leaders of PDP in the state.
“There have been
attempts to cause disaffection, confusion and make it look as if we are divided
and this has denied us our rightful place in the scheme of things here,” he
said
