Nnewi Residents lament frustrating Poor electricity supply with huge bills---industries close shop

Electricity consumers resident in the industrial town of Nnewi , Anambra state are currently passing through a harrowing experience occasioned by poor supply of electricity to the area.

The chairman, Board of Trustees of the Nnewi town union, a Pharmacist , Chief Mbadiwe Okongwu  said that the situation has become worrisome because a great number of industries have closed shop in the town and migrate to some other cities in search of greener pasture of electricity.

Okongwu pointed out that the hope of the people which rose to high heavens when the distribution aspect of electricity was privatized and handed over to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and other like companies has been dashed as people in the community are now forced to pay for electricity they never consumed.

" Imagine the number of electricity consumers in Nnewi who are all made to pay a fixed sum of N650.00, monthly outside the outrageous estimated bills sent to consumers who are made to pay through their noses for services not rendered." He noted.

The chairman BOT of Nnewi town union said that the situation at hand has become that of highway robbery without the gun supervised by the government of the day.

Okongwu, an astute member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) said that the electricity situation in the community will certainly play a key role on who the people of the area would vote for in the rescheduled 2015 general elections.

" As a member of APGA, I will like to vote for Dr Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential election but my worry is that his administration has not done anything to checkmate this systematic stealing from the poor to enrich the already wealthy few individuals in the society and honestly I think something must be done urgently in that regard."

The chairman board of trustees of Nzuko-Ora Nnewi said emphatically that the people of the town reputed for their industrial prowess are not asking for so much from the government but an enabling environment to actualize themselves of which availability of regular supply of power can not be compromised.

" If this less than one hour a week supply of power is not addressed, many more industries would crack and that is not in the best interest of the community which has become a kind of melting pot where almost every tribes in Nigeria get employed in one outfit or the other."

He passionately stressed the need for the government to set up a very active mechanism to supervise and regulate the billing methods of the electricity distribution companies most especially the EEDC before they choke life out of the poor people and as well push industrialists out of production with their alleged exploitative tendencies.
