reports that prominent candidates in the Anambra 2015 general elections avoided
the peace accord signed today with the police hierarchy.
to ensure peace reigns throughout
the 2015 Presidential elections, Political parties and candidates vying for
various elections in Anambra yesterday signed a peace accord aimed at peaceful
and friendly conduct by the political parties and candidates during March 28
and April 11.
Nigerian Pilot reports that the
state chairmen and secretaries of various political parties signed on behalf of
their parties while the candidates signed for themselves.
But, major senatorial contenders
including Chief Victor Umeh of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator
Chris Ngige of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mrs Uche Ekwunife of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Senator
Andy Uba of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were not present at the occasion.
Other candidates who were absent at
the peace deal were Princess Stella Oduah of PDP, Mr Earnest Ndukwe of APGA and
Mr Dubem Obaze of APGA, among others.
Addressing the stakeholders, the
Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 9, Umuahia,
AIGUsmanGwari, said that the peace pact was to prevent violence during the
poll.
“The aim is for us to imbibe the
spirit and the culture of politics without bitterness.
“It is to remind you that as you go
about playing the game of politics that you should play it the way it should be
played and not the way you want it to be played,” Gwari said.
In a remark, the Commissioner of
Police in the state, Mr Hassan Karma described the pact as a “treaty that will
shape the political future of the state and the country at large.”
“After signing the peace accord, we
are going to step up our actions by being more firm and serious in dealing with
anyone found breaking the law,” he warned.
He however said that those who could
not sign the peace accord could do so at the police headquarters, Awka.
The Senior Special Assistant to the
Governor Willie Obiano on Inter-Party/Political Affairs, Mr Ben Obi, who
represented the governor, reiterated the need for free and credible elections.
He urged the candidates and
political parties to maintain the peace and culture of non-violence witnessed
during and after elections in the state.
